Synopsis:
Mido Ban and Amano Ginji are known as the Get Backers, retrievers with a success rate of 100%. Whatever is lost or stolen, they can definitely get it back. Despite their powerful abilities and enthusiastic behavior, Ban and Ginji are terminally broke no matter what they do simply because little people would actually desire to hire them. As a result, the pair of them tend to do dangerous jobs, often leading to unwanted re-encounters with their old (and dangerous) friends.

First impressions of Ban are generally that he is a rude person and has a great sense of pride. With his unruly hair (He's often called "Urchin Head") and sunglasses, people already judge him poorly (It doesn't help that he gives unflattering nicknames to almost anyone he meets, e.g. "monkey trainer" Shido and "thread spool" Kazuki). But he is actually a great guy with a strong sense of leadership and a very talented person. He is one quarter German and he's the grandchild of the "Last Witch of the 20th Century".

He's also a brother-like figure to Himiko Kudo after she has gotten over her brother's death. Himiko's average fighting skills meant that she often bites off more than what she can chew. In such situations, Ban can be counted on to come to her aid (though it must be noted that she does return the favor at times).

In the GB duo, he's often the one who thinks of plans for their moves. Initially, Ginji was seen to be a sidekick to him. (In fact, when they first formed their partnership, Ban insisted that Ginji was only his sidekick.) As the story progresses, Ginji gradually held his own in their missions, and Ban acknowledged him as an equal.

He's the current partner of Ban Mido and was once the fearsome "Thunder Emperor" and the leader of a gang called "The Volts" in the Infinity Fortress. He received the title "Raitei" (literally, "Lightning Emperor") because of his ability to control electricity. This control grants him several unique abilities such as amazing regenerative power as well as the ability to become a human magnet and battery. Despite Ginji's dark past, his demeanor is one of an unassuming, energetic, and friendly boy with a strong sense of justice. He makes friends easily, often without trying - and is trusting and open to an almost naive extent. But when exposed to remnants of his past, he has a tendency to revert to his darker "Raitei" persona. For comical purposes, he also turns into a droopy Chibi, most likely designed after a tare panda. He's frequently beaten up by Ban (comically) for doing stupid things.

Little of his past is known. We do know that his childhood guardian is Takeru Teshimine, then ruler of the Infinity Fortress. Before his departure, Ginji founded "VOLTS", a gang lead by The Lightning Emperor, and "The Four Kings of the Volts" to protect the Infinity Fortress from the monsters of the Beltline.

One of the former Four Kings of the VOLTS, currently working as a guiding agent in Shinjuku. Kadsuki is the one to go for if you want information on just about anything; chances are, he knows all of your secrets, too. He keeps in close contact with Shido and Ginji, but he doesn't usually work with them. Kadsuki fights with strings, as one might expect from the Fuuchouin String Style; there are a great many elusive fragments of this art that can't be traced. However, it is an incredibly flexible skill -- he can overhear conversations that take place in the presence of one of his strings, change his physical appearance and voice, sew people's mouths and eyes shut.

First introduced as the beastmaster, he has the ability to control animals, although perhaps it should be better stated that he asks them for favors as he views animals as his friends. Once Volts disbanded, Shido left the Infinity Fortress to make a living outside, like Ginji. After reconciling with Ginji (whom he felt had betrayed Volts by leaving the Infinity Fortress), Shido took a cue from the Get Backers and started his own retrieval service - occasionally aided by Emishi. He is very independent and cold to others. Even though his powers allow him to control animals, he considers them friends, and tries to protect them as they do him. He eventually ends up living with Madoka Otowa, and he has an ongoing rivalry with Ban; he calls Ban "snake bastard" ("Snake-for-Brains" in the anime) while Ban's retort is often "saru-mashi" (monkey boy) or, due to to his stay with Madoka, "pimp".

In VOLTS, Shido is paired with Masaki Kurusu to protect the East Gates of the Infinity Fortress. Due to this, he knows a lot about Masaki and his followers, although it is doubted he knows about Masaki's true identity as a vassal for the Voodoo King. He remarks that Masaki has changed a lot from what he used to be , 'a man who will protect the weak.'



Name: Kudo Himiko (Lady Poison)

A delivering agent, and independent contractor. She became a transporter so that she could eventually meet Ban and hopefully kill him, but found herself unable to do it once they had met again, and slowly she seems to be coming to terms with it. Himiko's talents lie in her seven poison perfumes. Flame scent [Kaenkou] will make a person's body burn from the inside, causing them to breathe fire; regression scent [Taikoukou] causes the brain functions to be reduced to minimum, turning people into essentially monkeys; puppet scent [Kugutsukou], which makes others obey her every command; tracking scent [Tsuibikou] which will allow her to track her own movements, or for others to follow her trail; time scent [Jigenkou] that ceases all muscle movement in the victim at the designated time; corrosion scent [Fushokukou] that reacts like acid to anything that it touches; and acceleration scent [Kasokukou] that doubles her physical speed each time she uses it, at great risk to her own health.

Hevn is the negotiator for the GetBackers. She finds clients and brings them to the attention of Ginji and Ban. Aside from that she doesn't do much else. The most noticable feature on Hevn are her very large breasts that she makes no effort to conceal.



Name: Makube (MakubeX)

Makube was found in a sack as a child. Only his last name, Makube, is known, for it was written on the bag itself. He later came to be known as MakubeX, the 'x' symbolizing an unknown variable, and his "name" is always written in romaji. MakubeX is a genius hacker, capable of manipulating computers to do whatever he pleases. He was originally taught by Gen but swiftly surpassed him in skill.

He was raised by Gen, whom he calls Grandfather, but left home to join the VOLTS. During the VOLTS's rule of Infinity Fortress, he was one of the "Four Kings", alongside Shido Fuyuki, Fuuchouin Kazuki, and Masaki Kurusu. After Ginji Amano left the fortress, he, as the only one of the Four Kings remaining, took over, instituting a dictatorial rule; he was known at this period as the "young demon king".

During the 'Infinity Fortress' arc, the GetBackers are hired to retrieve the mysterious 'IL' from him. It is later discovered that IL is in fact a computer disc containing important data required for producing an atomic bomb. (however, IL is also a short form for "implosion lens", one of the most crucial parts of an implosion-type nuclear weapon). The arc ends with his reconciliation with Ginji, who acknowledges the transfer of power.

MakubeX's second-in-command is Sakura Kakei. In the IL arc, his four chief subordinates were Juubei Kakei, Haruki Emishi, Takuma Fudo, and Kyoji Kagami; Fudou vanished afterwards, but Juubei and Emishi remained with him. In the manga, after the Divine Design arc, Toshiki Uryuu came under him; he assigned the newcomer to his old comrade, Juubei.

Kuroudo "The Jackal" Akabane works as a "Transporter", a person is paid to escort things to a certain location. With his attire (black hat and coat, complete with shirt and black tie) and polite manners, he could be mistaken for a harmless person. But for those who even remotely heard of his name, they know that the Jackal is possibly the most evil hakobiya to ply his trade ever. Entertainment is his main goal, not money; he is mainly a hedonist and the jobs he takes are chosen exclusively his own for amusement. He likes to decapitate his enemies while engaging them in battle, a practice that many of the other characters see as going too far. Indeed, the other characters (notably Ban Mido and Ginji Amano) do not like him because of his other habit of cutting up anything which stands between him and his goal, whether man or beast. (In his own words, he is a "consummate professional.")



Name: Emishi Haruki (Fresh Blood Joker)

One of the followers of Volts in Infinity Fortress. He was known as the "Fresh Blood Joker" (Senketsu no Joker) because he would always laugh as the blood of his enemies was shed, always killing with a smile. Also, his skills in combat mean that he is often covered in the blood of his enemies after battles. (In fact, Shido Fuyuki once commented that if his will becomes stronger, his might is actually on par with the 4 Kings of VOLTS.)
Emishi's weapon is a long whip woven from the hair of the women of his people which also referred to as "Dragon's Hair" because, thanks to the special way the hair is looked after before and after it's woven as well as the special way that it's braided, the whip itself is as strong and pliable as a dragon's whisker. The whip itself consists of a single grip in the middle with two whip lengths protruding from each side, which Emishi handles very well with quick and fluid attacks such as the "The Spinning top", "Venom Imitation", "Sandstorm" or "Winds of Destruction". Another technique Emishi has is that his blood, as with all Loulan warriors, is highly combustible when it make contact with oxygen, though, unfortunately for Emishi, it only seems to work when a large, arterial flow of blood is used. He went under the rule of MakubeX after VOLTS broke up as one of the new four kings, chosen for his speed and fighting prowess and fought the retrievers of IL in the Infinity Fortress. He is the only male descendant left from the ancient Western Chinese desert kingdom of Loulan (Rouran) who are able to fight.
He is also an admirer and good friend of Shido after the Beast master made his way to his village in the Infinity fortress, delievering food to the starving children, an image radically different to the wandering rumours. (Popularity rating: 14th with 158 votes)

A calm and seemingly careless man from the highest levels of Mugenjou (Infinite Fortress), a place called Babylon City. A master of mirrors whose fighting style revolves around illusions and doubles by using diffuse reflections, he is extremely powerful and has joined forces with MAKUBEX for unknown reasons. He is sent by MAKUBEX to attack Himiko Kudo and to stall Ginji Amano and Kurudo Akabane from reaching the main chambers of Mugenjou. While his motivations are mysterious, we can be sure that the Getbackers will run into him again.

The Kakei clan and the Fuuchouin clan have been allied for 500 years, with the Kakei serving as doctors and bodyguards for the Fuuchouin. When the Fuuchouin main clan was attacked and destroyed, all that Jubei could do was get Kadsuki to safety, and he swore as they fled to Mugenjou with Jubei's sister, Sakura, that he would become stronger so that he could protect Kadsuki. He was a member of Kadsuki's gang, Fuuga, and followed him into VOLTS as well -- but for an unknown reason, when Kadsuki left Mugenjou, Jubei was not able to follow him...

physician, heir to the Kakei clan legacy; one of MAKUBEX's elite, the New Four Kings. After he was betrayed and abandoned by Kadsuki, Jubei continued to live in Mugenjou with his sister, who had chosen to remain in service to MAKUBEX. They are by far his most fervent followers. Jubei is most famous for his needles, which he can either use to pierce unwell blood vessels and heal any wound, or throw with deadly accuracy to kill. However, the secrets of the Kakei clan have evolved to the point where they have other techniques as well, such as using magnetism to control their needles. Jubei's most secret and forbidden technique is the "Kokushin", Black Needle.

A 16-year-old high school student, Natsumi was Ban and Ginji's client at the beginning of the anime who then came to work at the Honky Tonk as a part-time waitress. In the anime, she has amazing ping-pong skills and even once takes on one of the Get Backers' clients while they are busy with another case (despite her lack of skill at anything besides table tennis, shogi, and cooking. Notable here is that she chose to wear an outfit consisting of Ban's shirt and glasses, and Ginji's pants and gloves for the case.) Sort of the GetBackers' unofficial groupie, Natsumi is very devoted to Ban and Ginji, often worrying about their welfare and staying up late at the Honky Tonk to welcome them back from a mission (This is also seen in the MV of the first ending theme in the anime, although the duo were just away to get groceries on a rainy day. Also, the song is sang by Otoha, Natsumi's seiyu). In a case of real life mirroring art, in the anime, Natsumi once teamed up with Emishi on a retrival mission (the same episode where she wore the outfit mentioned above); her seiyu (Otoha) later married a comedian.

Eventually, she becomes Shido's girlfriend. She was once kidnapped by Shido's enemies (the Kiryuudo, another fictional ancient clan of aboriginals who communed with insects), who wanted to use her to exchange for the Chimera.
